Who we are
The Toroa Foundation is a charitable trust invested in funding projects in the Coastal Otago region which benefit the cultural, educational and environmental betterment of our communities.
Our keystone project for 2024/25 is a campaign for UNESCO Biosphere Reserve designation in Coastal Otago. Our commitment to co-curating the proposed Biosphere Reserve is anchored in Te Ao Māori, the Māori worldview, which serves as the foundational roots nurturing the growth of our Biosphere tree.
We strive to cultivate a balanced relationship between humans and the natural world by integrating traditional indigenous wisdom, core values, and contemporary scientific methods. This collaboration ensures that the biosphere reserve not only builds biodiversity resilience but also honors the cultural narratives that have shaped our landscapes for generations.
